The Day That iOS5 and iCloud Gives Independence to the iPad

Independence Day for IOS devices

With iOS 5 there’s going to be independence from the personal computer, in as much as when you buy an iOS device such as an iPhone, and iPad or an iPod Touch, it will no longer be necessary to connect to a desktop or laptop computer in order to activate it. It will be great for those that don’t have a computer and want to use the iPad as their main or only computer. It will be possible to set up the device wirelessly, as soon as you take it out of the box.

The Amazing iPad

Three two one backup strategy

We will have to wonder how that is going to work with regards to backups of the iPad. Having a computer backup of your documents is vital and that includes the situation when the iPad is your only computer. For backing up, I recommend a three two one backup strategy. What this strategy means is that you have at least three copies of a file. There is a copy that is on your hard disk on your main computer, a copy on a second hard drive or SSD drive, and the third copy on a different storage device. Then you should have one of those copies that is off-site. So that can mean, that it is stored in the cloud, or it could be that you have a second hard drive which you move to another location. For example if you go to visit your mother on a Sunday, while you are there you could deal with her backups for her computer, at the same time you could swap the hard drive that you leave there, which contains the back up of your own computer. Having a pair of hard drives that you continually swap like that, would be the perfect solution.

Apple Have backup and Restore Covered with iCloud

According to the Apple website, you will be able to do backup and restore of your iPad with it automatically using iCloud. Hopefully that will be one of things that will be working on day one when iOS 5 and iCloud becomes available to us. Having a backup is not just the documents that you have, or the e-mails, or the bookmarks that you want to save, it is also the operating system and the settings. As it is now, when you connect with a cable to your iTunes on your Mac or PC it will do a full backup of your iDevice. It remains to be seen how well this new iCloud backup and restore service will work using iCloud.

Dropbox and iOS 5

With Dropbox for iPad, you do get your free 2 GB of data storage, and more if you tell other people about it. I have ten and a half gigabytes of storage which is the maximum you can get without paying for it. There are still quite a lot of applications that will continue to use Dropbox as an option for storing files to be used on the iPad. Dropbox is a good method for copying files to iPad or moving files to the iPad and I expect it will continue to be so for some time yet. Even with the 5 GB of storage you get with iOS 5 and iCloud and the way it works so that the 5 GB will go a long way, I recommend that it will be better to still keep some things in your Dropbox account.

Tablet computing with the iPad is the way forward

With iOS 5 and iCloud making the iPad more independent from a desktop or laptop computer, Apple are signifying that the iPad as a full on computing device is the future. This will be the perfect solution for the computer nerd that wants to buy his granny a computer and the intuitive iPad will be the way to go. The iPad will be just right for the businessman that knows nothing about computers, although I find it weird that there should be such people in this day and age. I suppose I should admit that I do have a brother that never uses a computer. Mind you we are not close, perhaps if we were, he would be a computer user to.

On Safari iOS 5 Style Using the Reader and the Reading List

Doing a bit of sightseeing on Safari with iOS 5

When you’re using a computer or a number of computers, you have an iMac and a Mac mini and then you have an iPad too and maybe an iPhone, not only do you want your data in all of the places but you want to have a similar experience in each of these places too. This means that if you’re having tabbed browsing in your Safari or Chrome browser on your iMac, then you’re going to want to see tabbed browsing also on your iPad and other iOS devices. So in the update to iOS five you will be delighted to see in the Safari browser we now have tabbed browsing. I find quite often, I like to have more than one website open, and be able to quickly jump between those websites, so the tabbed browser is, I think essential.

The Amazing iPad

Reading List for iOS5 and iCloud

Another new feature is the reading list. This is where you can tap to save the page to read it later. It does seem a little like a bookmark, although in the reading list you do have two tabs one says all, and the other says unread. So you do have some extra facilities to be able to organise your reading list in Safari. The reading list isn’t the same as Safari bookmarks, because when you’re looking at your reading list drop-down, you will see at the top of the dialogue box, a button which will take you to your bookmarks. To get the web page into your reading list you will see that there is a button to the left of the URL bar, tap on that and you will see a number of options including, Add Bookmark, add to Reading List, Add to Home Screen, Mail Link to this page, Tweet and Print. You see an example there are about how Twitter is also integrated into Safari.

Safari on iOS 5 gets the rubbish out of the way

Safari iOS 5

Reader – get rid of all the clutter and the distractions from the webpage and allows you to just read the contents. The content is not just text, but also any pictures that are part of the webpage. Considering that there are so many websites now, that are kind of messy, with all sorts of things in the sidebars on both sides of the main part of the article, this will be a very useful addition to the Safari browser in iOS five.

Mail and Calendar Enhancements in iOS 5 and iCloud

In the new iOS 5 we are also getting updates to Mail and also to Calendar, nothing spectacular, but in Mail you will be able to do some text formatting. In Mail you will be able to drag to rearrange names in address fields and also add a flag to important messages. I didn’t know it wasn’t there before, but in iOS five it will also be possible to do a search which looks into the body of messages. The biggest change that is part of iCloud, that I’m sure many are looking forward to, is the free e-mail account and that will allow you to keep up-to-date easier on all of your devices. I use Gmail at the moment for that, probably I will start to use the e-mail account that comes with iCloud. I will just do a forwarding from my Gmail accounts to my new iCloud e-mail address.

The Calendar application will also be working in conjunction with iCloud, it will be good to keep all of that sort of thing in one place. The application now has added a year view for us iPad users. The week view is going to be a new thing for the iPhone and iPod Touch user’s.

Mail and calendar 2

MobileMe vs iCloud

In the past I was using MobileMe for dealing with my e-mail, contacts and calendar events and I was really pleased with it. I only stopped using it because I was on an economy drive and saving the $99 per year, made sense at the time. To replace what MobileMe gave me I’d tried using Google services. The Google e-mail service is brilliant and did a great job of replacing MobileMe e-mail. It was not quite so good for keeping up-to-date the contacts in my address book or for synchronising the events in my calendars. It was okay if I wanted to always go back to the Google website to get the information, but I do like to also use the calendar application in my Mac and on my iPhone.

Today I was listening to the Mac Break Weekly podcast, in it, the presenters were talking about iCloud. It was mentioned that there is somebody working on a book about iCloud and is having difficulties in writing the book, because of iCloud not being fully working. This is on the day before iCloud is due to be released to the world and you would have to wonder what sort of problems there will be for the normal users today. The presenters on the podcast seem to think that it is likely some parts of iCloud will not be fully functional on day one, but will be working better as time goes by. Mainly this was to do with third-party applications and the ability of the developers to use the new things available with iCloud, such as the document synchronisation.

So, in the past you have been using Scrivener for your writing application, then you may start to use pages instead, so that you can take advantage of the iCloud document updating. It will be extremely useful to be able to work on a document on one device, perhaps on your iPad, at the coffee shop, then to return home and not have to think about copying or moving files from the iPad, to continue working on the same document on the Mac.

Shooting Photos with the iOS 5 Camera App

Jumping the gun with iOS 5 and iCloud

I made a start to the day, thinking that the date today was 12th of October, naturally I was a little excited at the thought of getting my hands on the latest operating system for iDevices, the iPhone, the iPad and also the iPod touch. I should have actually looked at the calendar first, because it is actually only the 11th of October. No problem really as the articles as I have already written today and the rest of about iOS 5 and iCloud, will be more than just timely ready for tomorrow. In my defence I would say that I am not 100% today as I am suffering with a stomach bug. I blame the visit to IKEA yesterday, seeing as my wife had a similar problem, although hers started yesterday on the way home from the shop.

In any case I am still looking forward to the debut of iOS five and iCloud, the only difference being that I will be enjoying it one day later. So what else am I looking forward to?

Improvements to the Camera app in iOS 5 for iPad and other iDevices

Apple have made changes to the camera app and mainly it is about the speed with which you can use the camera to capture that special moment. Far too often, you see something that you would like to take a photograph of, but by the time you have the iPhone or iPad out of your bag or pocket and ready, the moment has vanished. With iOS5, Apple have made changes so that, at the very least the camera will be ready much faster.

Better Still to Have the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 as a Pair.

Apple iPhone 4S

Of course it will help if you have a newer faster iPhone as well and I don’t at the moment. The new iPhone 4S does look very enticing, seeing as I am still using the iPhone 3G. Even buying an iPhone that is not the latest model, the iPhone 4 is still available at around about €120 cheaper, it’s another option that I am considering.

It is always great to have the latest, fastest and shiniest of the technology being pushed out to us geeky fan boys. I will just have to ask myself if the faster processor and the ability to use Siri, the talkative app, will be worth spending the extra money. The Camera is also 8 megapixels on the iPhone 4S instead of the old 5 megapixels.

Enjoy being able to take photos quicker

In the new features of the camera app, you can use the camera directly from the lock screen, no having to do a swipe first. There are gridlines to help line up your photograph, pinch to zoom gestures, single tap focus and exposure locks, all combining together. to help us get better iPad photos or iPhone photos. It will also make a lot of sense to have Photo Stream enabled within iCloud, so that the photographs automatically will be downloaded to all of our Apple devices. When Apple were demonstrating the iPhone 4S at the recent Apple Let’s Talk iPhone event, they did spend some time showing how much faster it is to take the initial photo and also subsequent photos using that device.

The iPad camera will always be a few steps behind the iPhone camera.

I am still hoping that with the iPad 3, whenever it comes out, we’ll have a better camera also. In terms of marketing the Apple iPhone and the iPad, it could be to the advantage of Apple to have a poorer camera available for the iPad. Give the iPad a camera, just so that they can say that there is one, but always leave the iPhone as a better camera device. This way we will always want to have both devices and will be prepared to spend the money for the extra megapixels.

Other Photo editing apps for iPad

IOS 5 photo app

On this website I have already talked about how the Photo application will be enhanced. Go now look at the iOS Photo application information and see what can be done with the better editing facilities. It may also be the case that there will be enough power in the new Photo application that we will need fewer photo enhancing apps, such as Fx Photo Studio HD, Adobe Photoshop Express for iPad, QQ image editor HD, or maybe you just want to be social with your photos with Instagram. Some of the photo editing softwares I have just mentioned, are free, so you might as well get them anyway.

More about iOS5 and iCloud – Reminders and Twitter

Still talking about 12th October iOS 5 and iCloud day, what else do we have? There is the new Newsstand application and for me it really doesn’t mean an awful lot as I am unlikely to partake of any of the magazines available. Although if I did see the Imagine FX magazine at a reasonable price available in Newsstand, then I could be tempted. Imagine FX magazine is a magazine about concept art, digital art and as an artist and ex-art teacher, I would find it very interesting. I have ordered that paper based magazine before, it is a UK magazine, but I live in Spain so it works out too expensive to get it sent here. Where Newsstand would be useful, would be if the price of the magazine in digital format, would be the same as, or hopefully a little bit less than the dead tree version. Now you’re talking!

The Amazing iPad

Another thing about the magazines and reading them on the iPad as iPad magazines, is the layout of the text and artwork. With HTML 5 you can make some really stunning HTML5 magazines, that have a lot more to offer than what you would see in paper format. You can have more interactivity, more multimedia, such as audio and video. Overall a magazine on the iPad does have the possibility of being a lot better than buying the magazine off-the-shelf at the newsagents. Perhaps even more so for me, considering all the magazines in the newsstands here tend to be in Spanish.

Don’t forget to do something or other – Reminders

Reminders iOS5

On my iPad I already have a mountain of to do applications, that I mostly don’t use, but they are there just in case I want to get organised. I have Wunderlist which I use on my Mac and which is simple enough for me to actually make use of here and there. I also have a Remember the Milk and I recently downloaded an application called Orchestra, which although is not a native iPad app, is useful enough to keep. In iOS 5 and iCloud Apple are bringing us an application called Reminders, let’s have a look and see what it can do for us.

What will be the most useful thing of this application, is the fact that it will be there, installed and ready to use. They do say that 90% of success comes from actually just being there, turning up. You won’t have to try out any number of Get Things Done type of applications, if you try Reminders and find that it does as much as you need.Using PhatPad you get lists with handwriting recognition included.

When you use the location-based features of reminders you will be else to tell the iPad or iPhone to give you instructions to pick up some bread or cheese, when you drive into the supermarket car parking space. It looks like the Reminders application will be good for making all sorts of clean ordered lists. It will be a simple case of making a list and adding items to that to-do list. Second part of the process, will be to set locations and or the time that you want to be reminded. Only thing then left to happen then, is to be able to see the notification in your alerts, that will just appear magically, when you’re near your destination.

An integrated twitter iOS 5 and iCloud

Apple iOS 5 Twitter integration

Having things integrated, with an iOS5 Twitter application having hooks into the operating system does make things easier and quicker. Instead of having to change from one of application you are in to open up a Twitter client you will be able to send a twitter message from whichever application you are using at the time. How cool is that then? You could be looking at a web page in Safari, and have the sudden urge to share that page with a friend or two on Twitter. No problem, and the same goes for when you’re using photos, camera, YouTube and maps.

In our contacts list we will be able to have the Twitter username within the contact details. When you start typing the name of one of your contacts, the integration will help you do the mention or reply. I expect that the application will cover the basic and main points of using Twitter and for some power user requirements, you will still open up a Twitter client.

There are more things that iOS 5 and iCloud will give us, when we get it tomorrow. As you can tell I am getting impatient and I can’t wait much longer to get my hands on the new iDevice operating system for the iPad, iOS 5 for iPad and iCloud for iPad. I can tell you that I will be doing some serious playing, I mean testing, of the new and improved system that is iOS five.

The Amazing iPad

12th of October is iCloud Day

Tomorrow is iCloud Day and iOS 5 Day

The Amazing iPad

There has been talk by some of the Apple cynics, about how well iCloud will work. They are basing this on past versions of MobileMe, which did have few difficulties on release. To be fair there are a number of things that could go wrong, doing synchronisation of data does have the possibility of screwing up, fairly easily. I would like to think though, that Apple have learned from the previous difficulties with cloud computing and that the large data centre that they have now, is up to the job and more.

What’s we will not be getting as iPad users with iOS five

Just thinking about Siri, and wondering whether this is an iOS five or an iCloud new thing, but you’re not be able to use Siri new iPad. This is probably because to use Siri you need to have more memory. So even though you are running the A5 processor you still don’t have sufficient technology in order to be able to run Syria and talk to your iPad. If you want to do dictation you can still use Dragon dictation. It is just that you won’t be able to use the functions that Siri offers of setting up appointments, or have the integration with the system that the new service offers.

What is going to be good in iOS five

According to the iOS five on the Apple site, there are over 200 new features added.

  • Notification centre
  • Newsstand
  • iMessage
  • Reminders
  • Twitter integration
  • PC free
  • Camera enhancements
  • Photos App will do more
  • Improvements to Safari including tabbed browsing
  • Enhancements to the mail app
  • Improvements to calendar
  • Wi-Fi sync
  • Multi-gestures for iPad
  • Airplay mirroring

There are quite a lot of improvements to the operating system of the iPad which will arrive to us at some point during the day of 12th October. Depending on how you use your iPad, which of these broad areas of system improvements, that gets you excited, will be different. With such a big upgrade though, there is sure to be something for everybody.

IOS 5 and iCloud whats coming

iCloud Day Brings the Notification centre

It will be handy to have all our alerts in one place, whatever it is that we are doing. When you get in a new e-mail, a text or friend requests there will be a notification at the top of your screen and you can swipe down to have a look at them. If you don’t want to deal with them, the notification will disappear after a delay, so that you can deal with them later. When your iPad is in the lock screen situation you can swipe in order to be able to respond to one of your notifications. It will be interesting to see in use, exactly how that works. Will responding to one of your notifications unlock your iPad? Will we have to put in the password, or if not, does the iPad stay locked except for the notifications that you work with?

iMessage on iCloud Day

The users of the BlackBerry have been using the BlackBerry messaging service instead of sending text messages. The benefits of that is that they’re not using costly text messages as provided by the phone provider. iMessage will give us the same sort of messaging capabilities between people with an iDevice. You will still have to use the text messaging service that comes with a phone, if you want to send a text message to a friend without an Apple iDevice.

The Amazing iPad

There is a messages app and your use that to send text, photos, videos, your location and contacts. You will be able to send a group messages and be able to track your messages with delivery receipts and optional read receipts. Just the same as within Skype messaging, you will be able to see when somebody else is typing, to know that a new message will be coming in quite soon. If you have started a message session on your iPhone, it is not going to be a problem to pick up your iPad and continue the conversation, right where you left off.

Getting a Battery Extender For iPad to Watch More Movies on the iPad

ZAGGsparq battery extender for iPad

If you are likely to be going on a long flight, that could be more than 10 hours long, then you might be interested in an iPad battery extender. There is a product called the ZAGGsparq 2, that will help you keep your iPad running if you’re not able to sit in the business travel area and be able to plug in your iPad. The iPad battery does last an awful long time anyway, but there are occasions where something like the ZAGGsparq, will save the battery life of your iPad, just when you need it.

ZaggSparq battery extender for iPad

Benefits of a battery extender for iPad

The ZAGGsparq battery extender for iPad, will not only charge your iPad, but will also work with most USB charged gadgets. It is no problem to also be able to keep charged, your cellphones, digital cameras or your handheld gaming devices. It is fairly small and it will fit easily into a pocket or a bag, so that it is great for when you are travelling.

The ZAGGsparq 2 gives you 2 USB charging ports, one of them is optimised and the other one is for general use. By optimised, ZAGGsparq means that it is better for the smart phones that need a specific type of charging voltage or wattage. This includes the iPad, the iPod and the iPhone. The other port, which is a standard USB specification, basically is for any other devices that you require to charge via USB.

Specifications of a battery extender for iPad

  • The ZAGGsparq has 6000 mA hours of battery power with a lithium polymer battery, it has dual USB outlets with a digital LED display. On the ZAGGsparq website page it claims that it will give the iPhone four full charges, not sure how that translates into how long it will keep your iPad running, but it will keep your iPad running for quite a bit longer than the standard amount of time.
  • There are four yellow lights that indicate how much power is left in the iPad battery extender. It’ll tell you when you have 100% 75% 50% and 25% of power left. As it has the ability to charge more than one USB device at the same time, bear in mind that if you have 2 devices connected, the amount of power will not last as long.
  • The weight of the ZAGGsparq battery extender for iPad is 192g and the size of it is, 89 mm x 89 mm x 25.4 mm. So you can see that the dimensions of the product is very good, if you need to carry it anywhere, it will fit nicely, in one of your pockets.
  • If you have one or two of these ZAGGsparq iPad battery extender devices in your bag, then you will be able to get a good few more hours of enjoyment from using your iPad. Or if you are using the iPad for business, you will get more time to able to work creating content with your iPad.

IPad spec – Let’s check out the iPad dimensions

iPad dimensions let’s have a look at iPad spec

Tape Measure
The iPad 2 dimensions, the height of it is 241.2 mm and the width of is 197.7 mm, it has a depth of 8.8 mm and weighs 601g. Now I daresay that the Americans are looking at this thinking, what on earth are millimetres? But I would counter that question, by telling you that if you are working in inches there is no such thing as 9.5 inches. This is the way that the size is for the height of the iPad on the Apple website and if you are using the old imperial units then you should be actually saying 9 and a half inches.

When you are dividing inches it is not base 10. So isn’t it about time that America caught up with the rest of the world and started using a base 10 system, the metric system, that makes so much more sense than the imperialist measurements. And the same goes for ounces and pounds. Okay so I digressed a little bit there and had a little bit of a rant, while I talked about the iPad spec, and the iPad dimensions.

The Amazing iPad

The iPad dimensions in the previous paragraph, were for the Wi-Fi only model, and there is a slight difference when you add 3G into the mix. The only difference to the iPad spec when you add the extra 3G iPad connectivity is that the weight increases to 613 g or 607 g for the Verizon model.

There is a difference between the iPad version 1 and iPad version 2, mainly it is that the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter. In terms of the amount of memory, that you can have in the iPad specs, there is no difference between the 2 versions, you have 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The iPad screen dimensions are the same for both models of the iPad.

IPad specs for the wireless and cellular

The Wi-Fi for both models is exactly the same giving you up to 801.n Wi-Fi speed. I really must change the route that I have at home, because I have one that only goes as fast as g Wi-Fi speed. Either I should buy a new router that has gigabit ethernet connections and also the N Wi-Fi, or just get a box that does 801.n Wi-Fi so that I have the two speeds available in the house.

iPad specs – system on a chip

With the iPad 2, Apple started to use the 1 GHz dual core Apple A5, high-performance low-power system on a chip. Obviously this makes it faster than the iPad version 1 and at the moment, I am starting to wonder about how fast the iPad 3 will be. I am expecting that Apple will put in an even faster perhaps even a stonking fast, chip into the Apple iPad 3.

The iPad camera specs

iPad Specs

The back camera which will do video recording of HD up to 720 P of up to 30 frames per second with audio, is also a still camera with a digital zoom of up to 5 times zoom. Generally with a camera I don’t recommend using a digital zoom, as it reduces the quality of the image. Although seeing as the iPad does not have an optical zoom, you don’t have much choice if you do need to zoom into something, to take the picture.

The front camera, is of lower quality in that it only records up to VGA, for both video and for still images. Whether you are using the front camera or the rear camera, it is quite handy that you are able to tap on screen to be able to control exposure and that works for both video and for stills.

The power and battery iPad specs

The iPad 2 has the built-in 25 W hour rechargeable lithium polymer battery, which gives you up to 10 hours of doing whatever it is you wish to do with your iPad. It is up to 10 hours, because some activities will use more battery power than others. The iPad comes with a charging system, connect it to the power adapter or to the USB on your computer system.

iPad specs input and output

As with all of Apple iOS devices there is the standard 30 pin dock connector port, 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, a built-in speaker and a microphone. With the 3G version you also have a micro SIM card tray.

iPad Specification and Sensitive sensors

The iPad relies a lot on movement, which is why you need to have a 3 axis gyro and also an accelerometer, this is so that the iPad knows when you are moving it in 3-D space.

Compass image

Location, location, location

In the iPad 2, as well as having Wi-Fi to determine your location there is also the digital compass. The 3G model is able to more closely determine where you are in the world, with the assisted GPS that comes from using the cellular signal.

Audio, TV and video

The iPad 2 supports a good number of audio formats from MP3 to AAC as well as the Apple lossless formats a IFF and WAV. You can configure the volume by the volume control on the side of the iPad and also by using the volume control on the screen. There is also a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through that you can use if you buy the extra Apple digital A/V adapter.

You can do video mirroring and video out when you are using the digital A/V adapter or the VGA adapter. You can even do video out through the Apple composite AV cable at 576 p and 480 p. So there is a number of different video outputs that you can use, with the plethora of extra video cables available for the iPad.

There are limits with some of the Apple iPad applications with regards the output on video to external devices, due to the way that the iPad works, and also the restrictions placed upon some media, TV and movies.

The Amazing iPad

Mind your language – iPad specs

Obviously, because the iPad is sold worldwide there has to be language support for a large number of languages. And I find it interesting seeing as I live in Catalonia that there is support for Catalan. I am impressed!

Another thing that I find impressive with Apple products is the commitment to accessibility, for the people that require help in using this sort of technology. There is support for the playback of closed captioned content and a voice-over screen reader, which will be of use to the hard of hearing or deaf people. For the partially sighted you have the full screen zoom magnification and the ability to have a white on black display. Well done Apple!

Apple tries to do it’s best for the environment, as it knows that by producing these products, it is having some detrimental effect, so Apple does what it can, to reduce the environmental impact. So you have asked big free glass, mercury free LED backlit display, PVC free and also the aluminium and glass enclosure is recyclable.

IPad spec and iPad dimensions – using the iPad

The iPad dimensions, physical size and the iPad screen dimensions, of 1024 x 768, along with all of the other iPad spec, combined with the software of the operating system and the applications, gives us the iPad experience. There are other tablets out there, that have gone for the widescreen shape and various other sizes, but so far there has not been any other tablets which have been able to call themselves an iPad killer. It is not just the iPad specification and whether they can be beaten in other devices, but down to a lot of factors that come together to complete the iPad using experience.

Does The iPad Have a Camera And What Can you Do with it?

Does The iPad Have a Camera

This is a question that was very popular when the iPad one came out, and for a short while after the iPad 2 became available. Does the iPad have a camera? When the iPad was first introduced, everybody kind of expected that Apple would put everything into the new tablet device. Well perhaps not everybody, because it does actually make sense for Apple to leave things to put into a second version, and a 3rd version, as part of their planned upgrade path. Apple do need to have products which will continue to be better, brighter and shinier, on just about a yearly basis.

One might have thought that Apple would have a camera in the first iPad, seeing as there was already a camera in the iPhone. Apart from the need to perhaps have a roadmap for Apple products into the future, with the iPad, they may have felt that for the price point that they wanted for the first iPad, a camera would not be possible.

The Amazing iPad

Now with iPad version 2 the answer to the question – does the iPad have a camera? – The answer is an emphatic yes! It has 2 cameras, one on the front and one on the rear. The camera on the rear of the iPad is the main camera, and the better camera of the two, and it is a camera which will recording HD video as well as record still images and photographs.

An Alternative Question to Does The iPad Have a Camera

A question that is often asked photographers is which is your best camera? And often the answer to that question is always going to be, the camera I have with me at the time. It has already been seen that the most popular camera on Flickr presently is the iPhone, despite many of the users of the iPhone already having a fancy SLR camera. It is just so easy to pull out the iPhone and take a quick snapshot, wherever you may be. Now that there are cameras in the iPad, although the iPad may be a little bit more unwieldy to use, the iPad will also become popular for taking photographs. It does at least have the advantage of having a large screen, compared to the iPhone, for being able to see what you are taking photographs of.
Does the ipad have a camera
So wherever you may be at the time, it is going to be easy to capture those spontaneous moments. The iPad in operation is pretty quick, so to change from another application to the camera app, takes hardly any time at all. So that there is more possibility that you will be able to capture that unbelievable moment.

The iPad 2, also has advanced rear illumination sensors, and with this is makes it possible to take photographs in lowlight conditions, without the need for a huge flash. Instead of asking – Does The iPad Have a Camera – Ask about the tech Specs of the iPad 2

There are some people that complain about the camera that is available on the front of the iPad 2, because it is of lower quality and for the video recording or still image recording, only records up to VGA quality. When you think about it though, it’s not necessary that both cameras are of the same quality, and the camera on the front is sufficient for the purpose. The camera which is on the front is mainly for the purpose of using with Face Time, and other video conferencing software, such as Skype. The iPad 2, goes a long way to answer the question – Does the iPad have a camera?

On the Apple website for the iPad, Apple claim that the cameras maybe tiny, but are perfectly designed for face time video calling. Certainly it does seem to work very well, for a video chat, as you don’t want to have too much data having to travel across Wi-Fi and the effect being spoiled by low transfer speeds of data.

iPad Tech Specs

If you have a look at the iPad spec and check out the iPad screen dimensions, you will see that at 1024 x 768, iPad format, you have a nice sized screen. Does the iPad have a camera? Yes it does and it is a touch camera.
Photobooth iPad

Another application that is perhaps even more popular, with both children and adults alike, is Photo Booth. Without even trying, because the software does it for you you can pull funny faces and have special effects to your picture. This application certainly creates lots of laughter, with new looking like an alien, or a comic book character or when the software twists your face into a strange shape. The photos from Photo Booth are saved automatically to your photo library, where you can turn them into slide shows, or send them to your friends by e-mail. Now you know the answer. Does the iPad have a camera? It sure does and there are two of them. It is expected also that in iPad 3 the cameras will be of a higher mega-pixel quality.

Which iPad to Buy – What a Difficult Choice to Make

Apple iPad 2Even though the iPad has been available for a while now, and there are still some people wondering which iPad to buy. Seeing as there are now two versions of iPad out there, there is actually even more choice than there was before. When the original iPad came out, you only had to decide how much money you had to spend, then select the iPad which fitted within the budget. Maybe before you came to that decision, you would choose whether you needed to have 3G, as well as Wi-Fi connection. For iPad business use, then 3G connectivity would be great to have.

When I made my purchase of a new iPad 1, I decided that I did not need the 3G connection. Now, after using an iPad for a while, I have decided that when I buy the next version of the iPad, the iPad 3, I will certainly buy one that has 3G connection. Mifi or 3G on the iPad? It really is very valuable to be able to connect wherever you are, even when there is no Wi-Fi available. Up until now I have got around this limitation by using a MiFi. The MiFi is an incredibly useful small device, that takes in the 3G signal, and pumps it out as a Wi-Fi signal, so that up to five Wi-Fi devices can connect to it. The only disadvantage to the MiFi, is that it has a battery that does need charging after about 4 hours, although that amount of time is usually enough for my mobile computing with the iPad. Of course the other thing is, that you have to carry around another device. So you can see that having the 3G built into the iPad is probably worth the extra cost.

Which iPad to buy – How much memory do you need?

Another choice that you will have to make, with regards to buying an iPad, is how much memory you will have installed in it. We made the choice of getting a 32GB Wi-Fi only, iPad and we chose 32GB, partly because it was mid-range and partly because we felt we would need to have more than the 16GB that I had in my iPhone, seeing as we were likely to have more video stored on the iPad. The truth of the matter is that, if you are organised in the way that you store files containing your data, video, audio and other documents, then you may likely get away with having just 16 GB.

Now that there is the iPad 2 available, and it has a dual core A5 chip, which makes it faster than the iPad1 and there are also other upgrades to the iPad which make it better, Such as the addition of a camera or two. You have to decide whether you want to go with the new iPad, and buying it direct from Apple, either from the online store, the retail stores or getting a discount from the refurbished store. I can highly recommend the refurbishment store with Apple, because you do get a discount on buying an iPad that is as good as, or better than new. Or do you look for a secondhand original iPad?

Will the addition of a pair of cameras in the iPad to influence your decision about which iPad to buy

With the latest version of the iPad, version 2, you can use the iPad camera, or should I say cameras, because there is one on the front and one on the back, to be able to take photographs, and also to be able to use Face Time. With the camera on the rear you may also record video. The ability to record video and then do edits using iMovie for the iPad, is extremely useful if you would like to be able to do all of that while you are out and about, and do not have access to a desktop computer. You would be able to even get it uploaded to YouTube and have it available for your audience very quickly, because of not having to transfer files from one computer to another.

Aside from the iPad2 being thinner and lighter, weighing 15 percent lighter than the original, you also have the new iPad smart cover. The smart cover actually does the job of waking up the iPad and sending it back to sleep again, when you attach it magnetically to the iPad. So that the iPad smart cover is not just to cover and stand. Many users of the iPad 2 have found though, that they also prefer to have a cover of some sort, which protects the rear of the iPad. So as you can see, there are a number of things to consider, when you are thinking about which iPad to buy.

Maybe a good option would be to buy a second-hand iPad 1

IPad on lap2

Obviously, if you are on a tighter budget, and you feel that you do not really need all of the extra features as found on the iPad 2, then you could opt to buy a second-hand iPad 1. This is quite a good option when you consider that all of the Mac fan boys will want to have the latest version and will be selling the original iPad, that is if they don’t pass the iPad on, to a another family member. Passing the iPad down to another family member could be fairly likely, seeing as it is a computer that even your granny could use.

The thing to do when looking for a good second-hand iPad, would be to first of all ask your Mac fanboy friends what they are going to do with their iPad1 when they purchase their new one. If you talk to them nicely, you may find that you get a bargain, as well as knowing the lineage of the iPad and the fact that it will have been taken care of. You can grill them on the question of – What can an iPad do?

Which iPad to Buy – Take care on Ebay or Craigslist

Don’t forget also, that when deciding which iPad to buy, that there is also the possibility of buying iPads through eBay, Craigslist, and various other second-hand marketplaces. The usual comment of buyer beware, has to be taken into consideration, when buying an iPad from one of these sources. It may be a better option to go for an iPad from the refurbished store from Apple and instead of buying a more expensive model, get one that has less memory, or without the 3G. The Amazing iPad

Note taking With Penultimate iPad App

Penultimate the handwriting and for the iPad

The Amazing iPad

Whilst I was looking at the handwriting recognition application Phatpad, I also came across another application, which is touted as the bestselling handwriting app for iPad, over the last year. But when it comes down to making a comparison between the two applications for the iPad, there are quite a lot of differences. The main difference is that Phatpad is a handwriting recognition application, whereas Penultimate is for writing and keeping it as handwriting. So if you have terrible handwriting style and you want something that will convert that illegible script of yours, into something attractive and readable, then Phatpad would be the better option.

Penultimate iPad app in the iTunes App Store

With Penultimate you can store your thoughts in a handwritten format within named notebooks, for a topic, a project or a category. There seems to be no limit on the number of notebooks that you can create, or the number of pages that you can have within a notebook. It is possible to sort your notebooks and scroll through them within a fast grid type of view. It is simple to browse through your pages, inserting, deleting, duplicating or reordering of pages as you see fit.

Penultimate iPad is in The Apple iPad App Store

The application Penultimate iPad can be found in the Apple iPad application store and it is priced at $1.99. When you get started using the Penultimate iPad application there is information stored within a welcome notebook, so that you can find out about the main features of the application. They claim that you will be scribbling and whizzing within your pages and note books very soon, after starting to use Penultimate, and in my case it certainly will be scribble.

You can send a single page image or a full notebook in the PDF format and other iPad users that have Penultimate, will be able to collaborate with you on any of your shared notebooks. It is suggested, that if you use the iPad with the VGA video adapter you will be able to will to show your notes on a screen or with a projector, I don’t think I would like to show my horrible handwriting to too many people.

Custom Paper Styles in Penultimate iPad

Within Penultimate iPad you can use colour or you may use black ink on the photorealistic paper that you will find within the application. There is also an effective eraser tool that somehow, is always the correct size to rub out any errors that you have made. You may also import images to be able to have custom paper types that you can write on and also do drawings upon. Penultimate is one of those applications that would benefit from the use of a stylus for the iPad, the Boxwave stylus would be an excellent choice to use for your writing and drawing here.

This penultimate application for the iPad in the right hands, could be an excellent tool for making sketches, taking notes, displaying ideas digitally and for working things out prior to sharing them with other people. Personally I think I will stick with Phatpad, SimpleNote, Nebulous Notes, plus one or two other note taking applications that I keep on my iPad.
